چکیده

Reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) are potentially cytotoxic molecules because they can generate oxidative/nitrosative stress. However, ROS and RNS, at concentrations tightly regulated by antioxidants, serve also useful purposes in processes such as organ development, abiotic and biotic stress response and redox signaling. Antioxidant enzymes and metabolites are abundant in plants and particularly in legume nodules. Most of the enzymes involved in antioxidant defense are encoded by multigene families and occur as multiple isoforms in various cellular compartments, forming a dynamic network that is spatio-temporally regulated. Genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic analyses of model legumes, such as Lotus japonicus and Medicago truncatula, are unveiling a complex regulation of antioxidant pathways in different tissues and especially during the symbiotic interaction with rhizobia. This regulation includes alternatively spliced forms of the genes and post-translational modifications of the proteins, which with no doubt will be the subject of intense research over the next years. __________________________________________________________________________ M. Effects of salt stress on the expression of antioxidant genes and proteins in the model legume Lotus japonicus.

Salt stress negatively affects many physiological processes in plants. Some of these effects may involve the oxidative damage of cellular components, which can be promoted by reactive oxygen species and prevented by antioxidants. The protective role of antioxidants was investigated in Lotus japonicus exposed to two salinization protocols: S1 (150 mM NaCl for 7 d) and S2 (50, 100 and 150 mM NaCl...

Superoxide Dismutase and Oxidative Stress in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Oxidative stress is defined as the imbalance between reactive species such as free radicals and oxidants and the antioxidant defenses. Free radicals are molecules with one or more unpaired electrons, while oxidants are molecules with a high potential for taking electrons from other molecules. The more recognized reactive species are the reactive oxygen species (ROS), which include oxygen and it...

Oxygen-derived species: their relation to human disease and environmental stress.

Free radicals and other reactive oxygen species (ROS) are constantly formed in the human body, often for useful metabolic purposes. Antioxidant defenses protect against them, but these defenses are not completely adequate, and systems that repair damage by ROS are also necessary. Mild oxidative stress often induces antioxidant defense enzymes, but severe stress can cause oxidative damage to lip...

The glutathione peroxidase gene family of Lotus japonicus: characterization of genomic clones, expression analyses and immunolocalization in legumes.

Despite the multiple roles played by antioxidants in rhizobia-legume symbioses, little is known about glutathione peroxidases (GPXs) in legumes. Here the characterization of six GPX genes of Lotus japonicus is reported. Expression of GPX genes was analysed by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in L. japonicus and Lotus corniculatus plants exposed to various treatments ...

Antioxidant Defenses in the Brains of Bats during Hibernation.

Hibernation is a strategy used by some mammals to survive a cold winter. Small hibernating mammals, such as squirrels and hamsters, use species- and tissue-specific antioxidant defenses to cope with oxidative insults during hibernation. Little is known about antioxidant responses and their regulatory mechanisms in hibernating bats. We found that the total level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) ...
